In recent news, the Tiktok Lite app has been launched in France and Spain. The European Union (EU) has expressed concerns about the app’s reward program and has requested an explanation of the risk assessment conducted by Tiktok before its release. The Chinese social media service Tiktok has introduced a version of its app that rewards users for watching videos. Called Tiktok Lite, the app includes a reward program aimed at users over 18 years old, allowing them to earn points by completing various tasks on the platform such as watching videos, liking content, or following other users.

The EU has raised concerns about the effects of Tiktok’s reward program on children and users’ mental health. The commission has requested information from Tiktok regarding the risks associated with Tiktok Lite, particularly focusing on the impact of the reward program on mental health, addiction, and the protection of minors on the platform. The EU digital services regulation requires large online platforms to address social risks such as the spread of illegal content and disinformation. Failure to comply with these regulations could result in fines up to six percent of the company’s global turnover.

In February, the commission launched an investigation into potential violations of the digital services act by Tiktok, specifically looking into the negative effects on young people. As a journalist covering this topic, I am interested in learning more about how this investigation is progressing and what action may be taken against Tiktok if they are found to be non-compliant with EU regulations. Additionally, I would like to know more about how other social media platforms are addressing similar issues related to user privacy and mental health protection.
