The NFL’s kickoff rule is set to undergo a major change just one day before the league’s owners meet to discuss its implementation for the 2024 season. According to Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com, the touchback for a ball kicked into or out of the end zone will now result in the ball being placed at the 30-yard line, instead of the previously proposed 35-yard line.

However, it is still unclear whether a kick that falls short of the landing zone (the receiving team’s 20) will also lead to the drive starting at the 30-yard line instead of the 35-yard line. The concern with moving the touchback to the 30-yard line is that some teams may choose to kick the ball deep and concede the 30-yard line rather than risk allowing a dangerous return specialist to make a big play.

Under this new rule, teams may opt to use a fast and elusive returner like Tyreek Hill to return kicks due to reduced chances of high-speed collisions. However, further adjustments to this rule may still be made, each change coming with potential consequences. This raises questions about whether it would be best for league officials and owners to delay their decision until May in order fully consider all potential tweaks before finalizing it for next season.

Overall, this change highlights how important it is for NFL officials and owners to carefully consider any changes made to rules that can have a significant impact on gameplay and player safety.
