Since its inception in 1966, The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History has been an educational hub for Detroiters and visitors alike, with a focus on the rich history of African Americans. Over the years, the museum has undergone numerous expansions, introducing new exhibits, upgrading technology and enhancing its performance theater.

One of the newest additions to the museum’s permanent exhibits is “Honoring the Life and Legacy of Judge Damon J. Keith.” This innovative exhibit takes visitors on a journey through the life of Judge Keith, from his childhood to his time as a federal district judge. The use of cutting-edge technology allows for easy updates whenever new information about Judge Keith becomes available.

In addition to its enhanced exhibits, The Wright has revamped its theater to focus on performances that showcase music, poetry and film. The General Motors Theater is now open for events and rentals, boasting state-of-the-art theatrical equipment, surround sound systems and comfortable seating.

Detroit contributor Sarah Zientarski recently had the opportunity to chat with Charles H. Wright Museum President and CEO Neil Barclay about the museum’s continued growth and expansion of programming and operations.
