Zebra on the Run: The Epic Search for Shug on Washington’s Highways

A zebra that escaped from a vehicle on a highway in Washington state in late April has finally been recaptured after almost a week, according to local emergency services. The transport carrying four zebras was traveling from Winlock, Washington, to Anaconda, Montana, on April 28 when the driver stopped along the highway to troubleshoot a problem with his trailer. When she checked everything again, the four animals took off at lightning speed.

Three of the four zebras were captured again within the next few hours and were able to continue their journey aboard the transport. However, the fourth zebra, named Shug, headed into the wilderness and hid there for days. The animal was occasionally spotted by residents and hikers, but attempts to capture it were always unsuccessful. Many people on the internet made fun of the situation, with numerous memes and jokes circulating.

On Friday evening, the local animal rescue service decided to capture the animal with the help of volunteers. After a few hours, the capture was successful, and Shug was brought back to safety after six days. The zebra is reported to be doing well and will now join the other three zebras in Montana.
