Students interested in pursuing a career in zoo technology can now register for the fall semester or complete prerequisites during the summer at Jefferson Community College. Program Director Dr. Mark Irwin and Keirsten Chiodi recently appeared on 7 News at Noon to discuss the program, which provides students with hands-on experience working with zookeepers, veterinarians, curators, educators, and administrators.

As part of this year’s capstone project, students will provide animal enrichment education and presentations at Zoo New York’s season kickoff on May 4. JCC’s Zoo Technology program offers the necessary training and experience for students to gain technical expertise and a strong scientific background in order to provide the best care for animals, educate the public, and participate in cooperative programs regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Graduates of the program have found jobs across the country, with some even completing internships in places like Alaska. To start the Zoo Technology program at JCC in the fall semester, students must meet certain prerequisites in Math and English. These prerequisites can be completed during the summer session starting on May 28th or early full-session courses beginning on June 3rd.
