San Luis Obispo County’s Public Health Department has released a new Community Health Improvement Plan, which focuses on three specific priorities: mental health and substance use, healthy neighborhoods, and access to care. The plan was developed based on feedback from thousands in the community and data from a recent community health assessment.

Dr. Penny Borenstein, the SLO County Public Health Officer, emphasized the importance of addressing substance abuse and mental health issues early on to prevent further challenges. She also highlighted the need for safe spaces like parks and access to healthcare professionals as key priority areas in the plan.

Adyan Nazmi, a member of the collaboration that created the plan and a professor at Cal Poly, stressed the significance of promoting optimal health in the county through creating opportunities and structures that support health. Dr. Borenstein expressed her hopes for the county, emphasizing the importance of accountability and ongoing conversations with the community to work towards health improvements.

The plan aims to leverage resources and capabilities of community partners, organizations, and educational institutions like Cal Poly to drive positive change and enhance overall health outcomes in San Luis Obispo County.
