Italian company IronLev has recently tested magnetic levitation technology on traditional “iron” infrastructure for the first time. This technology eliminates the need for expensive adjustments to tracks, making it an attractive option for train operators looking to reduce maintenance costs.

IronLev showcased a video of their test at the LetExpo2024 fair in the Veneto region, which demonstrates a prototype train weighing one ton traveling at 70 kilometers per hour on a track in Venice. The video highlights the ease of use of their technology, with the vehicle levitating on existing tracks without any special adaptations.

Magnetic levitation technology creates an air cushion that separates the vehicle from the track, reducing friction, noise, and vibration. This results in lower energy consumption and maintenance costs for both the train and infrastructure. While China has been using this technology for nearly two decades, its adoption on a larger scale is hindered by high costs and the necessity of building new railway infrastructure.

IronLev’s test is unique in that it is the first application of magnetic levitation on existing railway tracks without any modifications or additional elements. The company’s goal is to develop a test vehicle within a few years that can weigh up to 20 tons and reach speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour. This technology is already being used in various industrial applications, such as moving heavy windows and elevators.

IronLev’s president, Adriano Girotto, highlighted the versatility and practicality of their magnetic levitation system. Despite the challenges, IronLev is optimistic about the future of this technology and its potential to revolutionize the transportation industry by offering a cost-effective solution that reduces maintenance costs while maintaining high speeds and efficiency.
