The study, which analyzed more than a dozen previous studies involving over 35,000 patients, found that individuals who cut out salt or used a salt substitute had a lower risk of premature death from heart disease. The participants in the study were, on average, 64 years old and had a higher-than-normal risk for heart disease.

According to the American Heart Association, adults should aim to limit their daily sodium intake to 1500 milligrams. However, many people unknowingly consume more sodium than recommended through packaged or restaurant food.
