The Red Sox are facing a major challenge as Trevor Story, who dislocated his shoulder over the weekend in Anaheim, is scheduled to receive a second opinion on Friday in Los Angeles. There are concerns about his “bone structure,” which could potentially lead to surgery. According to manager Alex Cora, more information will be available over the weekend.

UPDATE: After receiving the second opinion from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, Story has decided to undergo surgery on his dislocated shoulder on Friday, with an expected recovery time of approximately six months. With Story potentially out for the rest of the season, the Red Sox have implemented new plans for their middle infield.

The Red Sox have decided to use platoons at second base and shortstop. Rookie David Hamilton and youngster Enmanuel Valdez will share shortstop duties against right-handed pitchers, while newcomer Romy Gonzalez and veteran Pablo Reyes will handle those positions against lefties. Additionally, Vaughn Grissom, who was acquired in the offseason as a second baseman but has primarily played shortstop this season, could start a rehab assignment on Friday and play shortstop due to his versatility. Rookie center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela may also be part of the shortstop rotation due to his flexibility and skill set.

Story’s absence is a significant concern for the team as he was expected to be a key player this year after missing most of last season due to elbow surgery. As a Gold Glove caliber defender and power hitter, he was expected to improve the team’s defense and add punch to their lineup. However, according to general manager Craig Breslow, there are concerns about his bone structure which could result in surgery being necessary. More information will be available after the second opinion on Friday
