Homelessness is a problem that affects many states, and two governors from opposite ends of the political spectrum have found common ground in addressing it. Florida’s Republican Governor, Ron DeSantis, and California’s Democratic Governor, Gavin Newsom, have both recognized the need to address homelessness and are taking steps to do so.

In Florida, DeSantis recently signed a bill into law that prohibits sleeping and camping on public property, as well as preventing local governments from bypassing the legislation. While emphasizing the importance of maintaining law and order, DeSantis also expressed his commitment to providing resources to help homeless individuals get back on their feet. He recognizes that homeless encampments can negatively impact the quality of life for Floridians.

In California, Newsom is eagerly awaiting a Supreme Court decision that could impact how states address unsheltered homelessness. He has filed an amicus brief in the case, arguing that efforts to clear homeless encampments have been hindered by court injunctions that delay progress and do not offer clear guidance to local authorities. Despite California investing billions in building housing and providing services to help homeless individuals, legal challenges have slowed down the process.

Both governors recognize the complexities and challenges of addressing homelessness. However, they are committed to finding solutions while also acknowledging the need for support from both state and federal governments. As they continue to work towards ending homelessness in their respective states, they hope to set an example for other governors across the country.
