In Bristol, a mural was recently painted by campaigners from the Value the Caring Economy Alliance to raise awareness about the undervaluation of care work in society. The mural, located on Gatton Road by the M32, invited residents to add their handprints in support of the cause.

The average pay for care workers has been steadily decreasing by 9.1% annually, and this decline disproportionately affects women who often take on the majority of caregiving responsibilities. As a result, many women are forced to reduce their work hours, give up their jobs or take on part-time positions. Research from the TUC federation of trade unions has shown that nine out of 10 care workers in England earn less than £15 per hour. Despite their vital role in society, their contributions are often not recognized or adequately compensated.

The Value the Caring Economy Alliance is advocating for a fairer and more caring economy that values the contributions of care workers. They believe that by caring for individuals at home, carers are actually saving society and the economy money that would otherwise be spent on hospital care. The Alliance is calling on policymakers and society as a whole to recognize the importance of caregiving and ensure that carers are adequately compensated for their essential work. Supporters hope that the mural project will spark conversations and encourage residents to consider their local councillors’ positions on care as upcoming local elections approach.
