On Monday morning, city and public health leaders gathered at the Tyler Rose Garden for a one-mile walk to kick off National Public Health Week. The purpose of the walk was to highlight the important work being done by public health professionals to ensure safe drinking water, food safety in restaurants, and providing lifesaving immunizations.

The Northeast Texas Public Health District, which began in 1936 as the Tyler-Smith County Health Unit, plays a vital role in the community. With the establishment of the Smith County Public Health District in 1994, the City of Tyler and Smith County have worked together to support public health initiatives. Mayor Warren emphasized the importance of organizations like NET Health, as they provide the necessary manpower to carry out essential public health services.

Efforts in public health have significantly contributed to the increase in the average American lifespan by 30 years since 1900, with 25 of those years attributed to the work of public health professionals. Teresa Byrd, dean of the UT Tyler School of Health Professions, highlighted the importance of preventative measures in public health to avoid diseases during a speech on Monday morning.

Throughout National Public Health Week, organizations across the nation are acknowledging their impact on improving community health and raising awareness about their work. The efforts of these organizations often go unnoticed but are crucial for ensuring wellness for individuals and communities alike.
