Xiomara Castro, the president of Honduras and representative of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), congratulated Vladimir Putin on his victory in the sham elections held on Sunday through social media. The statement from Castro caused a reaction from member countries of the regional bloc, who agreed that it should be understood only as one made in his capacity as president of Honduras, not in his role as representative of Celac.
On the other hand, Brazil did not comment on Putin’s victory. Meanwhile, President Lula (PT) sent a direct letter to dictator Putin congratulating him on his re-election in Russia. The Workers’ Party also sent a letter celebrating Putin’s victory and reinforcing the bonds of partnership between Russia and Brazil.
