The Premier League has announced a significant change in its approach to offside calls in soccer. Starting from the 2024-2025 season, all matches in the league will use semi-automated offside technology. The Semi-Automated Offside Technology will provide quicker and more consistent placement of the virtual offside line based on optical player tracking. It will also enhance the broadcast experience for fans by generating high-quality graphics to improve the viewing experience both in stadiums and on screens.
Although this new system for reviewing offsides will be implemented in the 2024-2025 season, it will not be introduced right from the start of the tournament. The Premier League clarified that this cutting-edge technology is expected to be ready for use after one of the autumn international breaks, following its successful implementation in the Qatar 2022 World Cup and the Champions League.
Semi-automated offside technology works by tracking players’ movements on the field in real-time. When a potential offside situation occurs, cameras strategically placed around the pitch generate virtual lines to determine the position of the offensive player in relation to defensive players. This ensures that offside decisions are made accurately and efficiently, reducing human intervention’s need during games.
