The Premier League has decided to introduce Semi-Automated Offside Technology for the 2024/25 season. This makes the Premier League the third major top division to adopt this technology, following Serie A and La Liga. The new system will use the same cameras and software that UEFA uses in the men’s Champions League, which has been proven successful in improving decision making.

Premier League clubs have unanimously agreed to the introduction of this new technology at a recent Shareholders’ meeting. The offside rules implemented through VAR will remain in use until after the first international break in the upcoming season. After this break, Semi-Automated Offside Technology will be introduced for the first time in the Premier League, providing quicker and more consistent placement of the virtual offside line based on optical player tracking. This enhancement will greatly improve both the in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters.
