The Long School of Medicine and UT Health San Antonio’s Medical Affairs have undergone some leadership changes. Dr. Francisco Cigarroa, MD, has been appointed as the acting dean of the Long School of Medicine, with Dr. Robert Leverence, MD, continuing as the executive vice dean for clinical affairs and acting vice president for medical affairs of UT Health San Antonio. In addition to these roles, Dr. Cigarroa will also direct the Alvarez Center for Transplantation Hepatobiliary Surgery and Innovation.

These changes come at a time when the organization is experiencing significant growth in its research and clinical missions, as well as an increased educational mission. The new leadership positions present an exceptional opportunity for those appointed to further advance the organization towards elite status among academic medical centers nationally.

During this transition period, basic science chairs, clinical chairs, and vice deans will report to Dr. Cigarroa while Dr. Leverence will oversee the clinical infrastructure and staff, along with the health science center-wide role in medical affairs. Key recruitments and the Mays Cancer Center director search are also ongoing during this time.

I am grateful for the collaboration between Drs. Cigarroa and Leverence during this transition period, supported by a strong faculty and administrative leadership team within the Long School of Medicine and UT Health San Antonio. Your hard work and dedication are deeply appreciated as we continue to grow our organization towards excellence in academic medicine.
