As the interim dean of the College of Science, Cody W. Edwards is set to take over from Dean Fernando Miralles-Wilhelm on July 1. This appointment marks a new chapter in the leadership of the college, with Edwards bringing his extensive experience and dedication to research excellence, leadership, and student success.

Over the past 12 years, Edwards has held various leadership positions at the university, most recently serving as senior associate dean for faculty and academic affairs in the College of Science. In this role, he helped shape academic policies and enhance faculty development, which will be beneficial in his new role as interim dean.

Prior to his position at the University of Maryland, Edwards served as executive director of the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation (SMSC) for nearly eight years. During this time, he strengthened the connection between education and research, fostering collaborative projects that helped further SMSC’s mission. His experience in shaping academic policies and enhancing faculty development will be valuable in his new role as interim dean.

Interim Provost Kenneth Walsh expressed confidence in Edwards’ abilities and cited his proven track record as evidence of his leadership skills. He noted that Edwards’ strong background in various leadership positions at the university over the past 12 years would be beneficial in leading the College of Science forward into continued growth and success.
