Moran Iron Works (MIW), a leading fabrication facility specializing in custom design and engineering solutions, has announced the award of a significant contract with SMS group for the fabrication of two granulation basins. These basins, each weighing an impressive 164,000 pounds and standing 59 feet high and 21 feet in diameter, play a crucial role in the process of granulating blast furnace slag to help decarbonize the cement industry.

This project represents a significant step towards promoting environmentally friendly practices in the cement industry and highlights the importance of utilizing innovative technology to reduce carbon emissions and improve efficiency. MIW’s involvement in this project underscores their dedication to providing cutting-edge solutions for a more sustainable future. The completed Granulation Basin from 2023 is currently being loaded onto a barge at Port Calcite in Rogers City.

The project began in January of 2024 and involved the utilization of the High-Wire Corridor to transport the basins to Rogers City Port. From there, they were loaded onto a barge for shipment to their final destination on the Great Lakes. This process showcases MIW’s expertise in fabrication and demonstrates their commitment to advancing sustainable solutions in the construction industry.

The new green technology offered by SMS group provides superior quality and lower carbon emissions compared to traditional Portland-style cement, providing high value and quality for reuse while reducing the industry’s carbon footprint. The basins will be used for granulating blast furnace slag, which will help decarbonize the cement industry by replacing traditional methods that produce high levels of carbon emissions with more sustainable alternatives.

Overall, this project represents an exciting opportunity for MIW to demonstrate their expertise in fabrication while also contributing to a more sustainable future through innovative technology solutions.
