Francisco Alvarez, the New York Mets catcher, suffered a torn ligament in his left thumb and will require surgery, according to manager Carlos Mendoza. The injury occurred during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Alvarez was placed on the 10-day injured list prior to the next game.
Alvarez sustained the sprain while running the bases the night before in a victory against the Dodgers. An MRI was performed to assess the damage. While acknowledging Alvarez’s energy and performance, Mendoza emphasized the importance of other players stepping up in his absence.
The 22-year-old left Friday night’s game after injuring his thumb in the second inning while trying to prevent a fall after a throw by catcher Will Smith. In response to Alvarez’s injury, catcher Tomás Nido was brought up from Triple-A Syracuse, and left-hander Kolton Ingram was designated for assignment.
Omar Narváez took Alvarez’s place as the starting catcher in the next game and expressed sadness over the injury but praised Alvarez’s toughness. He acknowledged that injuries are unpredictable in baseball and expressed readiness to take on the responsibilities left by Alvarez’s absence.
