New York state is set to invest over $33 million in mental health services as part of Gov. Kathy Hochul’s 2025 budget announcement. This significant investment will expand services for individuals struggling with mental illness and involved in the criminal justice system, including programs such as the Midtown Community Justice Center that helps those dealing with mental health issues handle their court cases.
Ibrahim Ayu, who faced federal charges following an incident with an NYPD officer in 2023, credits the Midtown Community Justice Center with changing his life’s trajectory. He spoke about how this center helped him find support and stability instead of resorting to incarceration, emphasizing the importance of providing mental health care to those in need.
In addition to expanding services for those in the criminal justice system, Hochul also announced that $19 million from the budget will be directed towards providing critical care to New York youth outside of school environments. Dr. Dayana Jimenez, owner of Manhattan Teen & Young Adult Psychology, expressed optimism about these investments, stating that early intervention is crucial for youth mental health development and that he believes they will have a positive impact on young individuals’ ability to develop healthy coping skills.
