The 2024 John P. Wyatt, M.D., Environment, and Health Symposium was held on April 4th at the University of Kentucky campus in the J. David Rosenberg College of Law Grand Courtroom. This symposium honored the legacy of Dr. John P. Wyatt, a renowned environmental clinical researcher who made significant contributions to the field of air pollution and lung pathology.

Representatives from universities and agencies across the state gathered to share their research and insights regarding the impact of the environment on health in Kentucky. Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton officially declared April as John P. Wyatt, M.D., Environment, and Health Awareness Month in recognition of the event’s significance.

During her remarks, Mayor Gorton emphasized Lexington’s role as a regional hub for healthcare and agriculture, highlighting the vital contributions of leaders like Dr. John P. Wyatt. She pledged the city’s commitment to educating future leaders, raising awareness about environmental public health issues, and ensuring a healthy environment for generations to come.

Organized by Erin Haynes, Dr.P.H., the Kurt W. Deuschle Professor of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health, and director of the UK Center for the Environment, this symposium marked an essential milestone with Mayor Gorton’s proclamation.

The annual event is supported by generous contributions from the John P. Wyatt family, particularly his son Philip Wyatt.

Dr. John P. Wyatt was a pioneer in linking air pollution to lung disease and served as director of the UK Tobacco and Health Research Institute.
