The leafhopper, a small pest insect, has been wreaking havoc in corn crops across Argentina. This has led to a reduction in the corn harvest by 3 million tons to 46.5 million tons, resulting in a loss of nearly US$2 billion. According to the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange, areas including NOA, NEA, north central Córdoba, north central Santa Fe, Núcleo Norte, and Entre Ríos will have an average of 17% of the planted area that cannot be harvested. As a result, the corn harvest is projected to be 3 million tons lower than the previous estimate and 10 million tons lower than the initial projection.

The leafhopper is transmitting a disease called stunting, which is causing damage to corn crops nationwide. The government has called upon ministers and secretaries of agriculture and production from central and northern provinces to coordinate measures against this issue. Additionally, Senasa has expedited the registration of insecticides to combat the leafhopper.

Due to the impact on the corn harvest, soybeans are now the main crop produced in Argentina. The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange estimates a production of 51 million tons but warns that lower returns in the north could affect this figure. The effects of spiroplasma from the leafhopper continue to be a concern in the region.
