During a visit to a missing-in-action war memorial in Scranton, Pennsylvania, President Joe Biden shared the story of his uncle, Ambrose Finnegan, who served in the Pacific campaign during World War Two. Biden emotionally discussed how Finnegan’s plane was shot down over New Guinea, where there were cannibals at the time. Despite efforts to recover his body, Finnegan was never found.

Biden’s comments were in response to comments made by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump about military service members. The president also referenced his late son, Beau, who passed away from brain cancer that Biden connected to his military service in Iraq. As he emotionally discussed his son’s sacrifice, Biden expressed his belief that Trump is not fit to be commander in chief.

The president’s visit to Pennsylvania was part of his campaign efforts as he seeks reelection. While spending time at his childhood home in Scranton, he reflected on his family’s military history and the importance of honoring those who have served their country. The trip was filled with nostalgia and reflection on his own experiences growing up in Scranton and how they shaped him into the person he is today.
