A recent study by researchers involving over 350,000 individuals of European descent has shed light on the impact of lifestyle choices on health outcomes. The study collected data on genetics, education, socioeconomic status, and disease history for each subject and assigned them a genetic risk score and a score based on their adherence to healthy lifestyle principles. Over an average of 13 years, the subjects were followed to assess their life expectancy.

The findings revealed that individuals who maintained an unhealthy lifestyle faced a 78% higher risk of early death compared to those with healthy lifestyles, regardless of their genetic risks. Those with a genetic predisposition to a shorter lifespan who also had an unhealthy lifestyle were twice as likely to die prematurely compared to those without genetic risks and a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, the study found that individuals with a genetic predisposition to diseases could reduce their risk of premature mortality by 62% through adopting a healthy lifestyle.

The four key factors that significantly reduced the risk of premature mortality include regular physical activity, sufficient sleep duration, a healthy diet, and avoiding smoking. Prof. Eitan Friedman emphasized the impact of lifestyle on gene expression, stating that while genes are fixed, lifestyle choices can influence gene expression potentially affecting health outcomes.
