Italy is committed to strengthening NATO’s eastern flank with a maximum authorized contingent of more than 3,000 units, approximately 1,100 land vehicles, 1 naval unit, and more than 20 air assets. General Francesco Paolo Figliuolo, Commander of the Joint Forces Summit Operational Command, outlined Italy’s military commitment within NATO, focusing on the ‘eastern flank’ of the Alliance.

Italy is particularly committed to an ‘advanced’ presence in the Baltic area, particularly in Latvia as part of operation Enhanced Forward Presence. This includes a contingent of approximately 290 soldiers supporting a multinational unit at the regimental level. In addition to this effort, Italy provides significant support for NATO activities in the eastern area.

In the maritime domain, Italy participates in naval surveillance and data collection in the Alliance’s area of responsibility. In the air domain, Italy’s assets contribute to strengthening the alliance’s airspace surveillance system and data collection as well as participating in specific reassurance measures and air policing activities.

Italy has also pledged to contribute to 41 international missions and operations with a maximum authorized contingent of 12,000 units for Defense 2024. These missions include Operation Levante in the Eastern Mediterranean and Eunavfor Operation Aspides in strategic maritime areas. These operations aim to provide humanitarian assistance in Gaza Strip and protect free navigation respectively.

Overall, Italy remains committed to supporting NATO’s activities on the eastern flank and participating in international missions to promote peace and stability.
