Sports columnist Gregg Doyel will not cover the Indiana Fever, according to a statement from an IndyStar spokesperson shared with CNN on Tuesday. This decision comes after an uncomfortable interaction Doyel had with Caitlin Clark during her introductory news conference as the newest member of the WNBA team in April.

During the news conference, Doyel made a heart gesture with his hands towards Clark, which she often did during her college basketball career. When Clark asked if he liked it, Doyel responded, “I like that you’re here,” and suggested she start doing it to him for them to get along. Doyel later apologized for his comments, acknowledging that they were inappropriate and awkward.

It is unclear if Doyel will cover the team at all during the season, as Gannett, the parent company of the IndyStar, did not respond to inquiries about the matter. When contacted by CNN, Doyel did not comment on the situation.

Doyel’s last published article was on the Indianapolis Colts’ NFL draft in late April. Meanwhile, Clark and the Indiana Fever are set to start their 25th regular season next Tuesday on the road against the Connecticut Sun.
