On April 11, Howard University School of Business Professor Dr. Kamal Agarwal was involved in a fatal crash on 6th Street NW and Fairmont. According to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Agarwal, who is 72 years old, was driving at a high rate of speed when he failed to negotiate a left turn, striking Howard freshman Mohamed Samura. Tragically, Samura died from his injuries four days later on April 15.

Although Agarwal declined to comment on the incident due to his health, School of Business Dean Dr. Anthony Wilbon expressed his condolences for Samura’s passing and offered full support to those affected by the tragedy. Meetings were held with Samura’s business orientation team, close friends, faculty and staff at the School of Business following the car crash and Samura’s death. Wilbon encouraged everyone impacted to seek professional help during their time of grief.

Agarwal has been teaching at Howard University for 23 years and specializes in information systems, network and internet security as per his university profile. The Howard University Office of Communications has not provided any information on whether Agarwal will return to teaching after his recovery or if there will be changes to traffic signage near Cook Hall. Currently, an MPD investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing and a lawyer representing Samura’s family confirmed that the investigation is still underway.
