Meritorious Artist Bang Thai, a 72-year-old veteran of the arts, recently underwent surgery to amputate half of his right foot due to diabetic necrosis. The former director of Quang Ninh Drama Theater has been battling diabetes for over a decade and is now bedridden, experiencing numbness, burning sensations, chronic pain, and insomnia in both feet.

About three months ago, a necrotic ulcer appeared on his right leg, which eventually led to the amputation of his toe. However, the wound continued to deteriorate, prompting him to seek treatment at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi. Dr. Nguyen Duc Hung explained that the patient’s twisted blood vessels and atherosclerosis made the intervention challenging. Without immediate treatment, there was a high risk of infection spreading throughout the body.

A team of specialists performed surgery on Mr. Thai to remove the necrotic tissue, revascularize his leg, and amputate half of his foot to prevent further complications. Following the surgery, Mr. Thai experienced less pain and better sleep, allowing for improved management of his diabetes. He continues to receive treatment for his condition and psychological support to overcome depression.

Despite his health challenges, Bang Thai remains committed to pursuing his artistic career while managing diabetes effectively. Doctors advised him to quit smoking, avoid sugary drinks and maintain proper foot care to prevent future complications. Diabetes-related foot issues are common among the elderly and can lead to severe infections necessitating amputation if not managed properly.

Regular screenings for diabetes are recommended for high-risk groups such as older adults with family history or lifestyle factors that increase their risk.

Bang Thai’s story serves as a reminder that even in times of great adversity or health challenges, it is essential to continue pursuing one’s passions while taking necessary precautions to manage any underlying conditions effectively.
