In 2023, Indiana passed a law that mandates schools to use curriculums aligned with the science of reading. To support this move, the state is offering a free professional development course to teachers who want to earn a literacy endorsement. Completion of the course will result in a stipend of up to $1,200 for eligible teachers until June 2025. This initiative aligns with Indiana’s commitment to improving literacy instruction in schools.

Additionally, Indiana passed a law in 2024 that requires all educators who teach in a literacy-related area and are licensed after June 30, 2025, to have the endorsement. The state has funded an 80-hour course that educators can complete to add the literacy endorsement to their license the following year. This move further emphasizes Indiana’s dedication towards improving literacy education in schools.
