The first sol of our mission is focused on remote science activities. ChemCam is conducting LIBS mosaics of “May Lake” and “Pavilion Dome,” two small tilted blocks, as well as a 3×3 RMI mosaic of a cluster of dark pyramidal blocks in the distance. Mastcam is capturing large mosaics of two targets on Pinnacle Ridge and “Sharktooth Peak,” a cluster of blocks we will explore in the future.

Following a break, Curiosity will perform contact science on the Bilko Pinnacle target. This task is challenging due to the block’s height, steep sides, and rough surface with bumps and pits, making it impossible to brush. MAHLI images are being taken from three different orientations to create detailed 3D images, as well as a 5cm stereo pair and a 2cm close approach.

A second contact science target, “Pipsqueak Spire,” a small light-toned rock, is also being examined with a 20cm and 5cm stereo pair. Due to its proximity to the rover, a normal 25cm standoff could not be achieved. Nighttime APXS observations are planned for both targets before the arm is stowed away.

After completing contact science, CheMin will conduct an analysis on an internal calibration standard. This analysis aims to track performance and ensure accurate data collection.
