Dr. Anibal Diogenes is an accomplished endodontist with a wealth of knowledge in the field of dentistry. His expertise lies in the innermost part of the tooth known as pulp, a connective tissue that plays vital roles in immunological and reparative functions. Teeth are far more complex than most people realize, with a high density of nerves that are essential to their health and repair.

Dr. Diogenes serves as a professor and vice-chair at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio’s Department of Endodontics, where he is also the director of the American Board of Endodontics. He is currently conducting research on how nerves communicate in apical periodontitis, a common condition affecting half of the world’s adults. Through his work, he aims to uncover new treatments for this painful condition by understanding the mechanisms through which nerves communicate with tissue repair.

The implications of his research extend far beyond apical periodontitis, impacting overall health responses to conditions such as osteoporosis, bone fractures, and myelitis. By unlocking the secrets of nerve communication, Dr. Diogenes hopes to provide relief for millions who suffer from debilitating pain caused by these conditions.

Collaboration between The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and Science & Medicine has led to advancements in scientific discovery that are enhancing medical practices worldwide. Thanks to Dr. Diogenes’ work, we are one step closer to finding new ways to treat and manage chronic pain caused by these conditions.
