WLU’s Zoo Science program is hosting its first annual open house on Thursday, April 4 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Arnett Hall. The event is open to students, faculty, staff, and the community and promises an exciting opportunity to explore the program’s various aspects through a series of stations featuring animal interactions, demonstrations, and student research.

At the end of the tour, visitors will be entered into a drawing to win prizes. The zoo science major students and faculty are eager to showcase their program to the community and celebrate their passion for maintaining the animal collection and the valuable experience they gain through it. The unique Zoo Science curriculum at WLU prepares students for employment in various fields, including zoo and conservation facilities, wildlife rehabilitation, federal and state conservation agencies, and graduate schools in ecological and conservation science.

Lauren Mort, WLU’s Animal Care Specialist expressed her excitement about the open house emphasizing that it’s essential to connect with the community and showcase what we do. She hopes that this event will help raise awareness about the program and its opportunities for students. Matthew Shuttleworth, who is coordinating the event as well as being a lab mentor shared his enthusiasm about how passionate students are about maintaining the animal collection and how valuable their experience is through this program. He also highlighted that this is just an initial step towards making it an annual event that celebrates not only our department but also its students as well.
