I recently subscribed to Discovery Plus without ads for €6 per month, hoping to catch the MTB World Cup on GCN. However, I was disappointed to find that the app was missing from my Samsung TV. I live in Austria and do not have a TV plan, so I don’t have Eurosport. I ended up mirroring my phone screen to watch the races on my TV.
Despite this workaround, I was able to watch the XCC on Saturday with multiple language options, but during the Sunday replay, only German was available. The interviews were not translated until later, making it difficult to understand riders’ perspectives. The most frustrating part was that despite paying for an ad-free experience, I was bombarded with ads every 10 minutes, particularly during replays. It is unclear if this is only during replays or also during live events.
On the other hand, when I tried installing the app on my Samsung TV after signing up on my phone, it was easily accessible. While there were ads during the Men’s XCC races on Saturday, there were no ads during the XCO races on Sunday. However, I noticed that ad breaks could be better timed during commentary segments to enhance the viewing experience overall. My experience with Discovery Plus had its ups and downs but left me wishing for improvements in user experience.
In conclusion, while Discovery Plus offers a variety of content at an affordable price point without ads, there are still areas that need improvement for a smoother user experience. The inconsistent ad placement and lack of translations can make it difficult for viewers to fully enjoy their viewing experience despite paying extra for an ad-free account.
