County Sales, a music store that has been the world’s premier source for Bluegrass, Old-Time, and traditional American music for over 50 years, has announced plans to close its doors on April 30. The store was founded by David Freeman in 1973 as an offshoot of his County Records music label and has since become a staple in the community of Floyd. Despite its rich history and loyal customer base, the store’s closure was decided by the board of directors of the Handmade Music School, who acquired the business from Freeman after his passing in December.

Freeman was a music collector, historian, and record label owner who fell in love with the mountains and moved his business to Floyd in 1973. The store is located on Locust Street across from another local favorite, the Floyd Country Store. Over the years, County Sales has become known for its extensive collection of traditional American music and its knowledgeable staff who have helped customers find exactly what they were looking for.

For those who have been patrons of County Sales over the years, this news marks the end of an era. However, Freeman’s legacy will continue to live on through his contributions to the world of traditional American music and through the memories shared by all who have experienced it.
