NATO is set to take control of the French flagship Charles-de-Gaulle aircraft carrier for a 15-day mission in the Mediterranean. This move represents France’s increased commitment to the Atlantic Alliance in response to Russia’s politico-military activities. The mission, which involves ships from several nations including the United States, Greece, Spain, and Portugal, will be led by an American vice admiral under StrikforNato maritime staff command.
French Vice-Admiral Didier Maleterre, second in command at NATO’s maritime command, highlights that this is the first time the Charles-de-Gaulle aircraft carrier and its escort will be under NATO’s operational control for such a prolonged period. Despite this, France retains the right to regain national command if needed during operations. France’s reintegration into NATO’s military framework is seen as a response to Russia’s renewed threat and a shift in its military focus from Africa.
The Charles-de-Gaulle, equipped with Rafale Marine fighter jets, will be accompanied by a nuclear attack submarine, frigates, and a supply ship from the French “carrier group” for the mission. The objective is to enhance cooperation and interoperability within NATO amidst a challenging security environment. France’s deployment of troops to the Ukrainian border and its role as a NATO framework nation in Romania further underscore its commitment to collective security efforts.
