Reggie Witherspoon, the head men’s basketball coach of Canisius University, has announced that he will not be returning for the 2024-25 season. This was mutually agreed upon by both parties after Witherspoon led the Golden Griffins for eight years. During his tenure, Witherspoon achieved 108 wins and guided the team to national postseason berths in 2016-17 (CIT) and 2017-18 (CBI).

Canisius University’s Vice President and Director of Athletics and Recreation, Bill Maher, praised Witherspoon for his leadership and the values he instilled in his student-athletes. Maher, who has known Witherspoon for over 25 years, emphasized Witherspoon’s focus on team development and the positive impact he has had on the Canisius campus and the wider Western New York basketball community. Maher expressed gratitude to Witherspoon and his family for their time at Canisius.

Looking ahead to the future of Golden Griffin men’s basketball, Maher outlined clear goals of building a competitive program that can contend for MAAC Championships. He stressed the importance of recruiting student-athletes who embody the values of Canisius University and contribute to an engaging student experience. Maher highlighted the role of a successful men’s basketball program in the university’s strategic plan, “Answer the Call,” which aims to leverage athletics to connect with alumni and the community.
