ByteDance has announced the suspension of the reward functions in TikTok Lite as they collaborate with the European Commission to address concerns raised by authorities. The app, which is an extension of TikTok and rewards users for watching and interacting with videos, is currently being tested in Spain and France.

The EU has launched an investigation into TikTok Lite’s impact on minors and how ByteDance is addressing potential risks associated with addictive behaviors. The reward mechanism in TikTok Lite has specifically caught the attention of the EU, leading to this investigation.

ByteDance has stated that they always work constructively with authorities and have decided to suspend the reward system on TikTok Lite in response to concerns raised. In a statement shared on social media, ByteDance announced the suspension of reward features while they investigate these concerns.

Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, acknowledged this decision and emphasized the importance of protecting children from potential risks associated with social media platforms. He highlighted concerns about addictive behavior risks and applauded TikTok’s decision to suspend the reward program in the EU. Cases against TikTok continue due to its addictive potential, and Breton emphasized the need for the Digital Services Law to ensure the safety of the European online space.
