Lindsay Sizemore, a resident of Oklahoma City, is passionate about improving the reading and writing skills of children in her state. She believes that requiring science of reading training or professional development for all individuals who supervise teachers or work directly with students will make a significant difference in the literacy rates of Oklahoma children. Currently, only 24% of Oklahoma children are reading at grade level, which is a concerning statistic given the importance of literacy skills for future success.

Drawing from her 18 years of teaching experience, Sizemore understands the challenges and rewards of working in a classroom setting. She believes that teachers need to be supported and encouraged to continue their professional growth and development in order to provide quality instruction to students. Sizemore emphasizes the importance of equipping teachers with the knowledge and implementation practices of the science of reading in order to best support students’ reading development. She sees this as a crucial step in ensuring that children are prepared with the necessary reading skills to succeed in society.

Sizemore encourages community members to reach out to their legislators to advocate for changes to the Reading Sufficiency Act to include mandatory science of reading training for educators. Letters to the editor are also encouraged as a way to raise awareness and support for this important issue. With her dedication and passion, Sizemore hopes to see significant improvements in Oklahoma’s literacy rates and provide better opportunities for children’s future success.
