As of Sunday, March 31, certain groups of patients will be able to purchase medical marijuana and its derivatives with prescriptions. These groups include cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation, patients with inflammatory bowel diseases, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s syndrome, Tourette’s syndrome, HIV, epilepsy, dementia, terminally ill patients, and those diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Prescriptions will be electronic and specialist doctors will be able to issue them up to a year in advance.
The reform aims to simplify access to cannabinoid drugs and eliminate intermediaries who charge additional fees for the licensing process. This will make medical marijuana more accessible for those who require a license. Additionally, private doctors will not be authorized to write prescriptions. Medical marijuana will no longer be classified as a “last resort” treatment option and will become more accessible for those who still need a license.
