Phoenix School Introduces Immersive Classroom Program Using Virtual Reality Technology

A tuition-free public charter school in Phoenix, ASU Prep Pilgrim Rest Elementary & Middle School, is set to introduce an innovative immersive classroom program using virtual reality technology. The school, which caters to pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade students and is located inside the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church at the intersection of Jefferson and 15th streets, will be the first elementary school in the nation to offer coursework through the Dreamscape Learn platform.

Developed through a partnership between tech company Dreamscape Learn and Arizona State University, the platform can be personalized to meet the needs of individual students. Richard Yarbough, president of the church’s philanthropic arm, expressed excitement about the immersive classroom providing students access to knowledge and experiences they may not encounter otherwise.

Principal Marissa Schneckloth highlighted the importance of engaging students deeply with schoolwork and showing the relevance of education in everyday life. The school has a dedicated area called the Dreamscape Learn Pod where students can use the technology, including VR headsets, joysticks, and other controllers.

CEO of Dreamscape Learn, Josh Reibel, mentioned that their goal is to enable students to become explorers and scientists through their technology. The program aims to make learning fun and engaging for students in new and exciting ways. ASU Prep Pilgrim Rest plans to implement the platform in the upcoming spring semester and continue using it through summer school into 2024-25 school year.

The introduction of this immersive classroom program is a significant step forward in providing students with innovative ways to learn while keeping them engaged with their studies.
