Tesla Reaches Settlement with Family of Driver Who Crashed in Autopilot-Equipped Model X

Tesla reached a settlement with the family of a driver who crashed in a Tesla Model X on March 23, 2018. The incident involved Walter Huang, who was driving the car at the time. Although the Autopilot feature was not yet considered self-driving, it provided advanced driving support by adjusting the car’s distance, changing lanes, and braking as needed. Unfortunately, Huang’s car misinterpreted road markings and accelerated to 70 miles per hour, crashing into a concrete road divider.

Following the accident, Huang’s surviving relatives filed a lawsuit against Tesla, accusing the company of producing a defective Autopilot function that caused the crash. However, in a preliminary report from June 2018, the US transport regulator noted that Huang’s hands were not on the wheel despite warnings from the onboard computer at the time of the incident.
