Roman Gabriel, a former NFL quarterback, passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 83, as announced by his son on social media. He stated that Gabriel died peacefully in his home of natural causes. The family requested prayers and privacy during this time.
Gabriel was a standout player at North Carolina State from 1959-1961 and was the No. 1 overall pick in the AFL draft and the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft in 1962. He chose to sign with the NFL’s Rams over the AFL’s Raiders. Throughout his career, Gabriel was a Pro Bowler in 1967, 1968, and 1969. He was also named All-Pro and the league MVP in 1969 after passing for 2,549 yards and 24 touchdowns with only seven interceptions. Despite his success, he was not able to win a playoff game, going 0-2 in the postseason.
