The United States has the lowest life expectancy at birth and the highest death rates for avoidable or treatable conditions. Additionally, the US has the highest rate of people with multiple chronic conditions. So, how can you beat the odds and improve your overall health? Ivanhoe tells us about some science-backed ways.

Small changes can add up to improve your health, as research shows. For example, commuting to work by bike can lower your risk of certain cancers and heart disease. Climbing stairs consistently can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 20 percent if done regularly. Stephanie Nickitas, Owner of CrossFit Winter Park, recommends incorporating stair climbing into your daily routine if possible.

Spending more time in nature has also been shown to have health benefits. A 10-year study found that exposure to green and blue spaces like parks or lakes can lower a person’s chances of developing a mental health condition. David Baker, a psychotherapist and performance management consultant, explains that finding joy or contentment in something simple can positively impact mental health.

Exposure to sunlight is another way to improve health as it reduces the risk of type one diabetes, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure, and certain forms of cancer. Experts recommend getting 10 to 30 minutes of midday sunlight several times a week. Finding ways to de-stress like meditation has been shown to lower bad cholesterol and inflammation compared to those who do not meditate.

Taking cold showers every morning for a month was found in a Dutch study to reduce sick days by 30 percent among those who took them regularly. Incorporating eccentric exercise like walking down stairs activates muscles while they are stretched and elongated which improves posture and mobility.

By making small changes in your daily routine such as incorporating physical activity, spending time in nature, getting sunlight exposure, finding ways to de-stress through meditation or challenging exercises like walking down stairs you can improve your health and reduce your risk of chronic conditions.
