The Minnesota Vikings recently acquired the 23rd overall pick in the draft through a trade with the Texans, just days after losing quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency. Speculation suggests that the team may use this pick along with their original pick at No. 11 to move up in the draft and select a quarterback. However, as the draft approaches, it remains unclear whether they will make a move or stay at No. 11.

There are six quarterbacks projected to go in the top half of the round, including Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, J.J. McCarthy, Michael Penix Jr., and Drake Maye. If the Vikings believe their coach Kevin O’Connell can develop any of these quarterbacks, it may be worth waiting to see how the draft unfolds before making a move.

Trading up for a quarterback carries significant risk as other teams like the Bears and Jets may also be looking to move up to secure one. Teams like the Broncos and Raiders could be willing trade partners, potentially causing the Vikings to miss out on their intended target.

If they choose to make a move in the draft, there are several teams that could be potential trade partners for the Vikings, including the Chargers, Giants, Titans or Falcons. Another possibility is that league intervention could change draft order due to Atlanta’s investigation regarding tampering with Kirk Cousins.

Ultimately, though, the Vikings have multiple options and could choose not to select a quarterback at all, focusing instead on other positions with their picks. They may also look to maximize Sam Darnold’s potential while addressing other team needs.

The decision by Minnesota will depend on how much they value getting a new franchise QB over other positions they need and how much they think O’Connell can develop any of these QBs if they do decide to take one.
