Venezuela’s opposition has officially announced Edmundo González Urrutia as their candidate for the upcoming July 28 elections, challenging President Nicolás Maduro’s bid for a third term. The decision was historic for the people of Venezuela, who believe they have chosen the next president of the Republic.

Omar Barbosa, secretary general of the alliance that nominated Gonzalez Urrutia, made the announcement. Although Gonzalez Urrutia was not present during the announcement, he was initially registered as a provisional candidate for the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD). The nomination process was extended due to reported blockages in the nomination system that prevented other candidates from being nominated.

Manuel Rosales, who initially registered his candidacy with his party Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT), decided to decline his candidacy at the last minute. This decision was met with some opposition from close allies but paved the way for Gonzalez Urrutia to become the unanimous candidate representing the opposition in the upcoming elections.

The unity in the opposition is clear as they unite behind a single candidate to challenge President Maduro. Other opposition leaders celebrated this decision, paving the way for a united front in the upcoming elections.
