The U.S.A. Track and Field (USATF) has reversed its decision not to participate in the World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru, scheduled for August 26-31, 2024. After consulting with World Athletics and the Local Organizing Committee in Lima, USATF received assurances that safety measures will be in place for the event. This change of heart comes just a month after USATF initially pulled out of the event due to concerns such as travel advisories and competitive readiness.

The decision to participate in the World U20 Championships is a priority for USATF, as the safety and well-being of its athletes, coaches, managers, and staff remains their top priority. The full team announcement will be made after the USATF Under-20 Championships, which are scheduled to take place on June 12-13, 2024 in Eugene, Oregon. This is not the first time the U.S. has had to pull out of the World U20 Championships. In 2021, Team USA decided not to participate in the event held in Nairobi, Kenya due to safety concerns related to COVID. However, the U.S. will have the opportunity to host the 2026 World U20 Championships when the competition takes place at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

The news of USATF’s participation in the World U20 Championships is a positive step towards promoting youth athletics on a global stage. It is important for young athletes to have access to high-level competitions that can help them develop their skills and reach their full potential.

Overall, this reversal of decision by USATF shows their commitment towards providing opportunities for young athletes while prioritizing their safety and wellbeing.

In conclusion, USATF’s decision to participate in the World U20 Championships marks a positive step towards promoting youth athletics on a global stage while prioritizing safety measures for all involved parties.
