In 1774, while working as a librarian at Bowood House in Wiltshire, Joseph Priestley made a groundbreaking discovery that would forever change our understanding of gases. Born in 1733, Priestley is often regarded as one of the founders of modern chemistry due to his pioneering experiments. He focused sunlight on mercuric oxide to discover the unique gas we now know as oxygen. This gas was later given the name ‘oxygen’ by French chemist Antoine Lavoisier.

To honor Priestley’s contribution to science, the town of Calne is set to receive a mural created by local artist Oli Knowles. The mural will depict the implements used in Priestley’s experiment and serve as an everlasting tribute to his groundbreaking discoveries. The project is being undertaken by the Calne Clean Up Crew, a local charity that aims to enhance the town’s aesthetic appeal while paying tribute to its historical significance.

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents appreciating the effort to brighten up the town and provoke curiosity about its historical significance. Priestley’s discoveries played a crucial role in advancing our understanding of gases and paved the way for future scientific advancements. The mural in Calne will serve as a lasting reminder of his contributions to science and inspire future generations to pursue their passions for discovery and innovation.
