In recent news, Ukraine has made headlines due to the arrest of two security colonels who were allegedly working with Russia to carry out an assassination plot against high-ranking officials, including President Zelensky. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that they had thwarted a plan by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) to execute these assassinations.
According to the SBU, members of the counterintelligence and SBU had discovered that Russia was seeking individuals close to President Zelensky’s bodyguard who could potentially harm or capture him. Two colonels from the State Security Department (UDO), an agency overseen by the National Assembly and tasked with protecting public agencies, officials, and their families, were arrested on charges of coordinating with Russia and participating in this plot.
In addition to targeting President Zelensky, the SBU revealed that Major General Vasyl Malyuk, the leader of the SBU, and Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Agency (GUR), were also targeted by Russian spies who were monitoring the activities of Ukrainian officials in order to provide coordinates for potential missile attacks. After missile strikes on these targets, Russia planned to deploy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to eliminate any survivors in the area before launching another missile to erase evidence of the attack.
Ukraine has not released any official statements regarding these allegations made by Russia. However, this is not the first time that Ukraine has announced thwarting a plot to assassinate President Zelensky.
