The groundbreaking ceremony for a new 75,000-square-foot technology building at the University of Houston at Sugar Land took place on October 5th. This new addition is part of a $65 million project approved by the Texas Legislature in 2021 and is included in the $389 million capital construction bond designated for campus facility and infrastructure improvements.

Jay Neal, associate vice president of academic affairs and chief operating officer for UH at Sugar Land, expressed excitement for the growth and impact this new building will bring to the university and the Fort Bend County region. The building will house technology division classes and programs that have been transitioning from the main campus to Sugar Land.

Construction crews are now preparing the site for building, with the first phase expected to be completed by summer 2023. The three-story technology building will be adjacent to the existing technology building and will serve as the home of the Cullen College of Engineering-Technology Division.

The new building will feature wet and dry labs, traditional and active-learning classrooms, computer labs, student lounge areas, conference spaces, and student advising spaces. The first technology building opened in 2019, and this new addition will provide expanded resources for students and faculty.

Once completed, this new addition will finalize the transition of all technology division classes and programs to the Sugar Land campus. This move began with a 2022 task force, which has been working on developing plans for relocating classes to Sugar Land while ensuring that students continue to receive quality education.
