The U.S. government has recently released its 2024 National Action Plan on Responsible Business Conduct, which showcases the government’s commitment to promoting green energy, upholding human and labor rights, combating corruption, promoting technology use that respects human rights, defending human rights advocates, and advancing gender equality and equity. The plan identifies four key focus areas for improvement in responsible business conduct.

The first priority focus area involves establishing a federal advisory committee on responsible business conduct to enhance collaboration with the private sector, academia, civil society, and other stakeholders on responsible business practices. This will help promote ethical and sustainable business practices across industries.

In the second priority focus area, the Department of Defense is conducting a review to evaluate the potential requirement or encouragement of membership in the International Code of Conduct Association for Private Security Providers by vendors. This will help ensure that private security providers adhere to international standards of conduct and uphold human rights principles in their operations.

The plan emphasizes the importance of businesses conducting human rights due diligence throughout their value chains in accordance with international standards. This comprehensive approach aims to promote responsible business conduct and create a more ethical and sustainable business environment. By taking a proactive approach to responsible business practices, companies can avoid negative impacts on people and the planet while also benefiting from long-term success and sustainability.
